A Case of Sponge Kidney

Abstract
Sponge kidney is a congenital developmental defect occurring in the medulla of the kidney, characterized by cystic dilatation of the collecting tubules. This rare clinical and pathological entity was first designated as "sponge kidney" by Cacchi and Ricci in 1948, and 149 cases have been:reported so far.
The authors present a case of sponge kidney observed in the National Medical Center, The patient 49-year-old-male, was admitted with complaints of hematuria, left flank pain and occasional fever for the past 5 months, The past and family history were not significant, Except for slight tenderness on the left costovertebral angle and lower abdomen, the physical examinations were negative, I, V. P. demonstrated the typical finding of sponge kidney showing the medullary cysts in both kidneys. Aortography showed double renal arteries in both sides with normal distribution of arterial branches, Chemical study ruled out the hyperparathyroidism and renal tubular acidosis.
Incidence, pathogenesis, pathology, physiology, therapy and prognosis are also discussed briefly.
